The Community of Merrill, Oregon

Merrill , Oregon is located near the south eastern base of Stukel Mountain in the rich agricultural Klamath Basin. Merrill is 19 miles south of Klamath Falls and the southern side of the town lies next to Lost River. The town is the gateway to Southern Oregon on Highway 39 and is known to have some of the best farming ground in the Klamath Basin.

Merrill , Oregon was named after Nathan Merrill, a settler who bought land from J. Frank Adams. The town was established in 1894 when Nathan Merrill donated 80 acres for the town site, and in 1903 Merrill was incorporated into Klamath County. J. Frank Adams and the Van Brimmer family are responsible for making Merrill the fertile agricultural land that it is today. They built irrigation canals in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s that brought life to the Merrill and Malin communities.

Today, Merrill is still a family community of approximately 900 people, with many 2nd and 3rd generation families in the area. Merrill is known for its annual Klamath Basin Potato Festival which includes a parade, BBQ, festival and exhibits. The first festival was held in the fall of 1934 and is held annually in late October to celebrate the end of the harvesting season.

Merrill is also known for its large 30ft x 50ft American Flag. The memorial flag was a community project to remember the POWs and MIAs of all wars. The flag was envisioned as an expression of hometown patriotism and appreciation – A reminder that America proudly cares and appreciates…..PAST, PRESENT and FUTURE!
